I've been trying to break out of the ol' comfort zone and give pastel a bit of a go. Never thought I would, mind: dabbling in it for GCSE put me right off - I couldn't control the medium at all and as a result it was just a powdery mess to me and I didn't take it seriously (is that like the equivalent of swearing in the art world?). Then - ha - I joined dA, and i'm like okkkaaaaaaaaaayyy pastel has something to offer the world. you people and your crazy talents! My reactions are always sitting somewhere between awe and self-pitying sorrow and thus the incentive to try as hard as i can and at the same time just enough dejection to quit altogether. so it balances out in the end and i just plod along as usual lol. anyway, so I tried. And the first time I try, the first time I have a decent stab at pastel and all it's colourful craziness, I get more faves for that piece than any other piece of art I've ever submitted ever. Does that mean I'm destined for the pastel? Or does it mean I'm just not as bad at pastel as I am at everything else lol? Or DOES IT MEAN... i should perhaps ignore what gets faved the most and put it simply down to the idea that the number of faves received purely reflects what's most attractive at first glance and NOT what is the 'best' piece of work in a conventional sense. YOU decide. I think I'll insert a LMAO right about now.
